Cats are VERY territorial and they love leaving their scents everywhere they go, even on people. Cats have approximately 60 to 80 million olfactory cells. The olfactory receptors are responsible for the detection of odor molecules for every living being. Cats communicate mostly through scents and their noses help them identify specific places.
They can locate food, mates, and a wide variety of different things. Cats can smell up to fourteen times (14x) better than humans. Cat’s noses are adapted to their settings and is one of the most important thing on them for senses. The part of the nose that we see has a leathery type texture so it can handle and absorb harsh treatments at times. The color of the nose depends on the parent of the cat and it will have the same color as it’s fur.

In a way humans are also territorial. Though not really as much as cats, humans also communicate by scents. We give off Pheromones which social connects us with another person that we are most likely to hit it off with. Sniffing the air helps amps up electrical signals from the snout to the brain, helping the schnoz detect even faint scents. A human only has between 5 and 20 million olfactory cells. This is why cats can naturally receive better scents without sniffing.
